This oil on canvas portrait is inspired by the intelligent, beautiful polar bear on its solitary journey through the arctic night. The bear is looking up and forward, the image capturing in the corner of the frame, before he disappears into the dark.

The stars, northern light and the moon are a constant behind him. The northern lights represent hope, and the moon? the rise and fall of it - sometimes its full, sometimes its but a sliver.

A long time portrait artist, my polar bear subjects, even if from my imagination, are very real subjects to me. When I paint, I escape into the solitude (without loneliness) of a polar bear world. Even though this artwork is a small treasure, I want the viewer to feel that mindful escape as well as polar bear love.

My paintings are always a commentary on the vulnerability of polar bears to climate change. Although they have been an animal of concern since 2011 (one of the main reasons I am inspired to paint polar bears) there is good news about them, too.
